An Almighty Update - Committees and Cocktails

As I write this blog update, we're nearing the end of Week 3 already (that's a quarter of semester one gone!). As time continues to tick away from us (and Christmas approaches) I thought it was about time I updated my diary to make my September/October activities more widely known!

Freshers Week - Final Update
Following on from my other Freshers Week updates, I just wanted to round off my reflections on Freshers Week 2011. Personally, I was really pleased with the diversity of events that I witnessed PGs getting stuck into. It has been a big concern of the Students Association over the past few years that PGs felt excluded by some of the student societies who were exclusively run by undergrads, but this year I definitely experienced first hand the eagerness of student societies to attract a PG membership. I was hugely impressed by the efforts made by Charlotte Baker, of the Mermaids (the Drama Society), who not only held a mixer specifically for PGs during Freshers Week, but who also invited us to go and see the Mermaids productions at the Fringe over the summer.  I was also really pleased to see the Townsend (commuting) Society at the Freshers' Fayre- I met Emma (President 2011-12) during the summer to talk about the sheer numbers of PGs who commute into St Andrews every day for classes, labs or to work on their research. The Townsend Society also hosted a great Freshers Week event which a number of PGs made it along too.

This year also saw the re-invention of the Opening Ceremony, with Student Services taking the reins and delivering up two wonderful welcomes for all the new students. Unfortunately this year the Opening Ceremonies clashed with the PGR induction (one of the main reasons why we held an official PG welcome with the Provost of St Leonards College in Parliament Hall a few days earlier), but there were still plenty of PGTs who enjoyed the ceremonies. You can see a video of the first ceremony here, and watch out for the highlight of the ceremony (for me at least) - The Dean of Arts citing the Uncyclopedia entry on St Andrews (if you haven't read it then you should, now, it's hilarious!).

I also had the honour of being asked by the gorgeous ladies over at Gradskills (now part of CAPOD) to give a short speech on PGSoc at the PGR induction. I really wanted to get across the message of collegiality in my welcome messages this year, but I felt this was particularly important at the PGR induction because PGRs often feel quite isolated from their colleagues in other Schools and at other levels of education, just because of the nature of doctoral study. Anyway, the PGR induction was really well organised- It had a fantastic range of speakers, they had invited lots of relevant groups from across the University to set up stalls for PGRS to browse during the breaks and -most importantly I suppose- the timekeeping was really good!

I also had the great pleasure of getting a tour around the newly re-furbished ground floor of the Main Library during the pre-sessional time. I think most, if not all, of you will have seen the refurbishment for yourself, and will have made up your mind about it- But I thought I'd share a few of the facts and figures I learnt that day (and that way you'll have something to impress fellow PGs with in the new Library cafe!)
- They have managed to create 74 new study desks on the new ground floor
- The nnumber of bookable study rooms has risen to 9
- Study rooms will soon be bookable online and accessible using a specially created keycode
- The materials budget (used to buy books and databases etc) has been increased by 40 percent
- 17 percent of the 1.2mn volume collection is classed as 'special collections' (rare books/manuscripts)
- Last but not least, the library will soon be equipped for *very* late opening (just check out the giant black barriers at the entrance)

DRA Cocktail Party
Interesting Fact No. 7: There are over 500 PGs living in DRA-FP this year!
I certainly wasn't aware of this interesting fact until the lovely Michael, one of the Wardennial team at DRA-FP got in touch over the summer to talk about the possibility of co-organising an event to be held in the DRA facilities building. We had originally planned to free ticket the event through the yourunion.net website, with the DRA wardens giving their 50 percent of the tickets out through their team of assistant wardens. What we didn't take into account was the insane levels of demand we would get for the event!

I gave the first sign-up opportunity to those new PGs who came along to visit our society table at the PGR induction and the Freshers' Fayre, and by the time those events were over we had given away the lions share of the tickets! After that I opened the giveaway up through the Facebook pages, and we had a complete sell-out within one day! The DRA-FP wardens were also (I think) slightly surprised to see queues of PGs waiting for tickets during every office hour in the run up to the event!

The event itself went really well- I manned the door myself to make sure thuat all those who had been allocated a ticket got in (and all those naughty PGs without tickets who tried to barge in were put on a waiting list). The drinks went down a treat... If slightly quickly... I think we might have to rethink the business model for next semester!

On a serious note, we're making a real effort to organise more co-branded events this year (that's events jointly hosted with other societies, university departments and sports clubs)- It's good for us (because we have a limited budget) and it's good for you (because that budget goes much farther in terms of the number and variety of events!). On that note, if you're part of a society and think you might like to co-organise an event with the PG Society, just send me an email and we can have a chat about it.

Committees
What with it being Week 3, the timetable of committee meetings is really beginning to heat up. You may not realise how many committees PGSoc is involved with, but as your representative body we have a duty to try and speak the PG voice in every forum we can- Regardless of whether hot drinks are complimentary (unfortunately). The year kicked with the Student Services Committee (SSC) meeting in week 1, SSC being one of the two committees that constitute the day-to-day running of the Students Associationa nd it's societies. The SSC is where the Presidents of various important societies share information with the sabbaticals (aka sabbs: the elected full-time, paid student employees who run the Union). This first meeting back was mainly a post-summer catch-up, but it did involve a cheeky little pub crawl afterward (I tried to keep up the PG side as well as I could, it wasn't easy!).

Week 1 also saw the first Academic Council (or Senate) meeting of the year. Academic Council is the highest decision making body comprised of academic staff in the University, and as such is a very interesting (if also a little intimidating) meeting to be a part of. Naturally, much of the talk at Academic Council focussed on how the changes to the education sector are being managed by St Andrews (think £36000 fees...) and on various strategic aspects of University management. To be honest, as someone who feels very strongly that education is a universal right rather than a commodity, I felt a little sad after Academic Council that a room containing some of the most intelligent people in the country couldn't see past how we would be 'coping' with changes as they were presented to us- I'd really like to see St Andrews leading the way in terms of presenting strong evidence for why we think education is too important to be placed in the hands of short-term-ist poiliticians. But, I have a plan on that, which is beginning to come together....

The following week saw the inaugural (for this year) meeting of the Students Representative Council (SRC), this is the second of the committeees which coordinates Students Association business, and the SRC deal s primarily with representation issues. As such, the various members of the SRC represent various student groups across the university, and there are 3 members of the PGSoc committee representing postgrads at these meetings. At the moment (as the AGM hasn't happened yet) it was just little old me, so I gave an update on all the PG representation issues we've been dealing with over the summer (accommodation, class reps, gradskills and changes to PG wardens). At SRC there was lots of interesting ideas about solutions to the accommodation situation (the situation being that there isn't enough) and also about who might be standing for Rector at the upcoming elections....

And finally this week we had the second SSC of the year (which thankfully did not feature a pub crawl!) and the first Teaching, Learning and Assessment Committee of the year. PGSoc is new to TLAC, we were asked to sit on the committee this year by the lovely Proctor, Lorna Milne, who felt that the PG view could be more strongly defended through a seat on the newly re-constituted committee for a PG student representative. I'm really grateful for this, not just because getting to sit on TLAC is a massive opportunity for someone planning a career in academia, but also because management across the University are really making a concerted effort this year to have the PG view represented, and including us in important decision making bodies such as TLAC really demonstrates this commitment, and also goes along way towards securing this input for future PGs.

ANYWAY, I think that's quite enough PG updating for now- My fingers are about to fall off! I'm off to enjoy a nice dinner at the fabulous Dundee Rep Theatre before I head off down top Edinburgh this weekend to get some proper PhD work under my belt before Week 4!

A Week of Websites

Well, it's now the final week before orientation begins- that came around fast!

One of my key targets when I took up the role of PG President was to unify our online presence- to provide a central vault of information for new and returning Postgrads looking for info on St Andrews. I worked last month on some running improvements to the Union PG mini site (www.yourunion.net/postgrad), but wanted to build the central site somewhere that would easier for Postgrads to find and navigate. After a great couple of meetings with the St Andrews webmaster, and a crash course in the site management software, I set about building the new PGSoc website...

And it's finally been published!

The new website has sections to let people know who we are, what we do and how to get involved, as well as providing a centralised guide to the Postgrad information available on the uni website, the union website and beyond.

I'm really pleased with where the website is at right now, but I'm also aware that there'll always be new things to be added- so please visit the website (www.st-andrews.ac.uk/pgstudents/stleonards/pgsoc) and let me know if there's something else you'd like to see up there.

Other than that, as you might have seen, I've been trying to get together the PG calendar for this year (see the website for more info) and I've been finalising the events for orientation week. We'll be throwing the inaugural St Leonards College Welcome Wine Reception in historic Parliament Hall next Tuesday (free tickets available from www.yourunion.net) and the St Andrews Postgraduate Safari the night after. The safari will be a team-based treasure hunt around St Andrews that will give all new postgraduates an opportunity to learn a bit about the town, the university and their history whilst having a whole heap of fun... And hopefully winning some prizes!

Anyway, got to run off, PhD work is calling, but I'll see you all during orientation week and I hope you have a good weekend of preparations!

Accommodation Woes and Edinburgh Shows

It's been a busy old week (and a bit) at PGSoc central- we've been down to Edinburgh, organising upcoming events and fielding SOS emails from new PG students arriving for 2011-12. (we also did a consultation, but read about that next post!)

The Fabulous Fringe

Last Friday we hired a coach from a lovely local bus operator and took a group of PGs down to Edinburgh to experience the delight that is the Edinburgh Festivals. Although there are many festivals on in Edinburgh during August, we mainly stuck to the Fringe -for one very good reason, we went with the hope of seeing not one, but TWO fabulous theatrical shows staged by our friends over at Mermaids (the theatre society) and featuring the work of Postgrads from the University of St Andrews!

Firstly, we saw Love Song which was both absolutely hilarious and genuinely moving- personally, I have seen many small professional theatre companies aim for this mix of tenderness, twists and humour and fall far short of achieving any, but Love Story really was wonderful.

After Love Song, our group divided as people went in search of the famed golden nuggets of comedy floating around the 40000 performances at the Fringe (I myself sloped off to see the Dog-Eared Collectives's 'You're Better than This' - which was the funniest thing I saw at this years fringe)- and regrouped later for Scene of the Titans. Wow. We were informed afterwards by the producer that the St Andrews student who wrote Titans did so in a summer, one summer. Titans is based on the true story of the formation of gay friendly rugby team in Dublin, and is a musical of epic proportions. We were all completely blown away by it, and we weren't the only ones- it has achieved an amazing amount of award nominations!

Following these two wonderful shows, a few of us were tempted in to see Jeff Mirza's comedy show. They say you've not had a proper Fringe until you've walked out of a show early because you worried that you might never laugh again if you stayed later... Suffice to say, we had a proper Fringe!

Upcoming Events

With most of the PG Committee buried in dissertations it's been a steep learning curve for me, as you might have read previously, to learn how to throw (and attract people to) events. I think the first major rule of planning PG events is beginning to sink in however: Plan it as soon as you think of it! The absolute requirement of getting everything nailed down and out to you guys ASAP just becomes more and more apparent. So, in the spirit of grabbing the bull by the horns, we pretty much have our freshers week events ironed out and formalised!

As you might have seen on the uni orientation calendar, we're throwing a St Andrews Safari to acquaint all the new PGs with the town, the university and their (occasionally gruesome) histories! We're also throwing a formal wine reception in Parliament Hall the day before (Tuesday evening) along with the Provost, and with the PG wardens.

In the nearer future, I am in the process of finalising arrangements for the 'End of Semester Karaoke (with Wii and dancing for people who don't like karaoke)' Party in the Victoria Bar. This is going to be a great 'final fling', both for PhDs who are facing the return of a teaching workload, and for masters students who are facing the prospect of graduation and probably leaving St Andrews. All the details are on Facebook, and as an added incentive, we're offering free cocktails to the first 50 people through the door!

Accommodation Issues

Problems with accommodation seem to be somewhat perennial for PG students -this itself seeming like a normalised situation but actually being highly dissatisfactory- and once again I am receiving emails from students on this issue.

It would appear that many PG students are facing the prospect of arriving in a month without any accommodation.

In the short-term, we're talking with some very helpful advisors from across the university to try to find a solution for people who find themselves urgently unsure of where to look for accommodation.

In the long-term, I'm quite aware that this situation, whereby the demand far outstrips the supply of university postgraduate accommodation, is quite untenable (especially given the recent HMO suspension). We're not only talking about this issue, but we're pressing it- it is one my priorities for next year to get a better deal for PGs as regards accommodation, and I believe there are plenty of people within the university who are willing and even in some cases keen to work with us on this point.

Anyway, that's my update for now, and I'll be issuing a draft report on the results of consultations with PG students over the next few days, I hope you'll find time to skim it over and give your feedback.

Good luck with the final dissertation push, Masters students!

Kickstarting the Events Calender

If there's been one thing I've learnt over the past 3 weeks it's don't try to go on holiday within 2 weeks of an event- even if you think it's all sewn up!

Along with some other really helpful people on the PG committee, I've been trying really hard to get an events calendar together for the rest of the summer. We're trying to organise an event every week, so that all you lovely PGs have things to occasionally distract you from all the researching you're doing!

So, the gorgeous Leonie and Sarah organised the first night of the Thursday film series ('Withnail and i') and I headed off to the Czech Republic for a week with my friend for some much needed R&R:

It was such a relaxing break (apart from a small interlude of food poisoning) but by the time I got back I had realised that the plans for Harry Potter Night had gone a little astray!

Anyway, a week spent in the Union, with the most excellent help of the wonderful Union managers Charlie. Bruce and Sandy, and it all eventually came together! I'm going to put up some photos as soon as someone sends them too me, since I was too busy dishing out Cauldron Cakes to take any!

Next week will be a busy one, we're planning on doing a little bit of consultation within the student body about accommodation wants, wishes and hates, we're going to take a bus full of PGs to experience the joys of the Edinburgh festival, and I'm getting training so that I finish building the new PG Society webpages on the St Leonards college website...

Speaking of which, I made some changes over on the students association webpages at www.yourunion.net/postgrad why not head over there and check them out?

Have a great week, I hope none of you get caught up inn the madness that is London, and enjoy your last few weeks if you're a PGT... we have a leaving gift in the works for you...

Is it Really Still Just Monday?

Hey everyone!

Normally I don't have any major PGPres tasks until later in the week, and the only thing I do on Monday is answer emails. But today has been jam packed with PGSoc business, so I thought I might give my update a bit early!

So first of all, last week (following an events subcommittee meeting that stretched territory into pretty much everything!) we had the official 'gown handover'. Below you can see David wearing the PGPres gown, Patrick O'Hare wearing his Association President's gown and me wearing... A pashmina inside and a goofy smile (some things never change...).

On a serious note however, we covered a lot of ground at the meeting on issues such as the accommodation problems and on St AndRe-Use. With regard to Re-Use, we're hoping to help set up a system (similar to the existing undergrad system) whereby departing PGs can leave items they no longer need (from kitchen utensils to printers) which can then be 'recycled'- passed onto arriving students at the start of the next term!

Also helping us on this is Transition University St Andrews (TUSA) or more specifically Rebecca Petford. Rebecca is a graduate of the excellent Sustainable Development degree at St Andrews and, through her role as an officer with TUSA, is looking to find innovative new ways (and boring, but effective old ways I imagine!) of reducing the carbon footprint of the University. One of the things we're really interested to see her develop is plans to offer more structured support in terms of accommodation and events/services for students who wish to remain at St Andrews over the Festive season!

However, this past week has been about 2 things: Working on the new website and trying to establish the events calendar!

The new PGSoc website is going to live at the St Leonards College section of the University website and is going to cover a whole range of issues pertinent to new and continuing PG students. Without letting the entire cat population out of the bag, it's going to showcase societies that could help you to have a more enjoyable/varied social life in St Andrews, it's going to link to a permanently updated events calendar - so you have one place to know whats going on- and it's going to feature an 'alternative prospectus'... But more on that later!

And finally, I've been trying to establish the events calendar for the rest of the summer and you'll be pleased to hear--- it's (almost) done!

We're going to be holding regular events in the union every Thursday night to give you something to take your mind off of that dreaded dissertation (or terrible thesis)! Next Thursday (and every second Thursday thereafter) will feature a film shown in the Salad Bowl from 7-10pm (top floor of the Union). Leonie and Sarah, who are organising the film nights, tell me that the first film will be Withnail and I!

And on the Thursdays which aren't film night will be social nights in the Union bar! To get the social nights off to a magical start the first one (on the 4th of August) will be Harry Potter themed. Come along and unashamedly celebrate your appreciation for the boy who lived in true Hogwarts style, with broomstick burgers, seeker sausages, pumpkin juice and SO much more! Following the great feast, we will test your wizarding knowledge with a Harry Potter quiz, with a series of Hogwarts-a-rific prizes up for grabs!

... Even for me, some of those puns were a little embarrassing...

Anyway! I'm off to write some content for our new website, and for The Book! And if you're a PG class rep- expect a lovely little email from me in the near future! To finish, here's a nice picture of my temporary office on St Salvators Lawn the other day- don't you just love St Andrews on a nice day?!

Update on University Accommodation Issues

Hey Everyone- Just a quick post on an emergent University accommodation issue.

It recently came to the attention of the Society that a substantial number of PGs were on accommodation contracts that finished before the end of term. Although these terms were written into the contracts from the beginning of the year, we took the stance that (given the general shortage of University accommodation) there was not provision made to allow students to find accommodation which had sufficient time built into the contract to allow them to complete their studies. There was also the impending issue of nearly 100 postgraduates being without accommodation within the month.

Our accommodation and taught postgraduate reps sent an email to the accommodation service, requesting clarity on why the contracts needed to finish before the term ends. We received an email letting us know that the time between the contracts ending and the new term starting was needed for refurbishment/redecorating works.

Last night we had an Events Sub-Committee meeting and informed the President of the Students Association (you can read his blog here) of the situation. He immediately grasped the immediacy of the problem and sent a further email to accommodation, stressing the need to find both short term and long term solutions to the accommodation issues that postgraduate students are facing.

Today we received an email from accommodation assuring us that those students who were left without accommodation (as a result of this issue) for a period of their studies in 2011 would be able to be rehoused in Albany Park for the remainder of the term. Further, they have indicated real willingness to work through the issues we have raised with them.

Thanks so much to Philip, Milindu and Patrick for getting a solution for all the postgraduates facing impending homelessness!

If you are affected by a contract finishing during August 2011 and would like to be rehoused in Albany Park until the 5th of September then click here to email accommodation services.

Anyway, I'm supposed to be working on PhD stuff, so I'm going to shoot off-- don't forget to follow the PG Society and Patrick O'Hare on twitter!

11 days in....

After 11 days of officially being President, it's about time I posted an update of what's going on with the PG Society, what's about to be going on and what you can get involved with!

The first thing that deserves a mention is the fabulous Postgraduate Ball which was organised by the 2010-11 Events sub-committee.

(Photo from the Postgraduate Society Facebook page)

This glamorous event took place on the 10th of June in the suave surroundings of the Garden Suite in the Scores Hotel, St Andrews. A special shout out must go to Paloma, who did a wonderful job of organising the event and to the Black Sheep Music Society and our accomodation rep Milindu for the best Ball music I've ever had the pleasure of dancing to! (ceilidh music excluded naturally!)

Following the PG ball, David (the outgoing President) and I have been in "meeting-mode"! So far, in the past couple weeks we have met up with:

  • The outgoing sabbaticals from the Students Association to summarise the advances made during the year and to talk about priorities going forward
  • Prof. Dina Iordonova, the Provost of St Leonards College
  • Rob Warren at Student Services to talk about proposed development of the wardennial system for postgraduate students
  • The team at University Estates to consult on behalf of the PG student body on the space and accomodation planning process
  • Ryan Parks, head PG Warden, to talk about consulting with students in University accomodation over their accommodation preferences and to liaise over plans for events over the coming year
  • Chris Lusk, Director of Student Services, for a catch up and to talk about the role of the PG Society in relation to the wardennial and ASC (Advice and Support Centre) provision and;
  • Stephen Evans from the Webmaster team to get his advice and help in building a **NEW WEBSITE** for the PG Society on the St Leonards College website
I've been completely overwhelmed by how helpful -and generally lovely- everyone has been! While we have been approaching these meetings with an open agenda, so we can get a feel for the different kinds of relationships we can seek to build with various departments and people across the University, we've also been getting some feedback on our own issues.

We've been pleased to realise that the new proposal for electing PG Vice-Presidents within each School, who will sit on a forum co-ordinated by the PG Society, is well supported by everyone we've spoken to it about. This is great, because we can now confidently move forward to arranging the elections for October!

We've also been collecting feedback on what information should go into the PG Freshers 2011 information pack and online information portal (which we are currently building).

Finally, we've been looking at the events we should be throwing for the rest of the summer, and what our orientation week schedule should include! I don't want to give away the surprises... we have an events subcommittee meeting tonight... but several buses and a safari may or may not be involved!

Anyway, I don't want you to think it's all work and no play! I've also attended the brilliant fundraising evening featuring the heartbreaking film 'Grave of the Fireflies' (1), gone to Wimbledon for a bit of sporting relief (2) and enjoyed some PG Society events preparation with my colleagues in the School of Management (3) and with the rest of the conference delegates at the Moral Economies of Creative Labour Conference in Leeds (4)!
(1)

(2)

(3)
(4)

Anyway- lots of preparations to do for the events sub-committee meeting! I'm going to sign off- But don't forget to follow us on twitter (@StAPGSociety) and like us on Facebook (Postgraduate Society St Andrews).

The Early Bird...

Hello everyone!

Those of you with a keen knowledge of University handover dates will know I've been slightly keen myself in launching this blog, as I (Holly) will become PG President on the 1st of July. Hoppefully you'll forgive my preemptive blogging efforts!

Just a quick introduction, my name is Holly Patrick and I'm a second year PhD student at the School of Management who will shortly be St Leonards Postgraduate President for the academic year 2011-12.

Here's the obligatory snappy photo, so you can harass me whilst shopping in Tesco with stories of foul landlords etc (nb I welcome *those forms* of harassment, but those only, and am not suggesting that there are any foul landlords anywhere, ever).

I'll be using this blog to keep anyone who's interested updated on my activities as Postgrad President, and also (if you feel like talking back at me) as an easy place for people to get in touch with me, and to let me know what's going on!

So, please look back for updates, or 'follow me by email' using the link below and feel free to comment, give your opinion on current issues using the poll, and I'll be blogging away, keeping you all in the loop.

Good luck researching!
